What Is HIFU?

HIFU — High Intensity Focused Ultrasound — is a non-invasive energy treatment that delivers precisely focused ultrasound waves deep into the skin, bypassing the surface entirely. The energy targets the SMAS (superficiomusculoaponeurotic system) — the same structural layer surgeons tighten during a facelift.

By heating this deep tissue to a therapeutic temperature (65–70°C), HIFU triggers an immediate collagen contraction and initiates a natural wound-healing response. Over the subsequent 2–3 months, the body produces new collagen and elastin, gradually lifting and firming the overlying skin.

The result is a genuinely lifted, tightened appearance — without anaesthesia, incisions, or recovery time. For patients who want meaningful lifting without surgery, HIFU is one of the most compelling non-invasive options available.

Targeting the Right Depth

Unlike radiofrequency or laser treatments that primarily address the skin's surface or dermis, HIFU's focused ultrasound can penetrate to three distinct depths — 1.5mm, 3mm, and 4.5mm — each corresponding to a specific tissue layer.

The 4.5mm depth, which targets the SMAS layer, is what sets HIFU apart from other non-surgical treatments. No other non-invasive technology reliably reaches and stimulates this deep structural layer. It is precisely this depth that allows HIFU to create a true lifting effect rather than simple skin tightening.

The ultrasound energy is focused into tiny thermal coagulation points — leaving surrounding tissue completely unaffected while triggering a precise, controlled injury response that stimulates collagen remodelling.

Where Can HIFU Be Applied?

HIFU can be applied to multiple areas of the face and body. A full-face treatment addresses the entire lifting zone in a single session; targeted treatments focus on specific areas of concern.

01

Face — Upper & Mid

Lifts the brow, opens the eye area, and tightens the upper and mid cheek for a more youthful, rested look. Targets 3mm and 4.5mm depths.

02

Jawline & Lower Face

Firms jowling, defines the jawline, and reduces lower face laxity. One of the most popular and visually impactful treatment zones.

03

Neck

Tightens loose neck skin and reduces the appearance of horizontal neck lines. Often treated in combination with the lower face.

04

Décolletage

Addresses crepey skin and fine lines on the chest. Results are more subtle than the face but can meaningfully improve skin quality in this delicate area.

The Treatment Experience

HIFU treatments at Aurelia Aesthetics are performed by our medical team using a mapping approach — ensuring every line of ultrasound energy is placed with intention. The session typically lasts 60–90 minutes for a full face and neck treatment.

01

Consultation & Imaging

Your physician assesses facial laxity and volume, discusses expectations, and creates a personalised treatment map tailored to your anatomy.

02

Preparation

A coupling gel is applied to the treatment area. Oral pain relief may be offered beforehand. No numbing cream is required for most patients.

03

HIFU Delivery

The handpiece is placed against the skin and lines of focused ultrasound are delivered systematically across the mapped areas. You will feel heat and brief tingling sensations.

04

Same-Day Recovery

You leave the clinic immediately, possibly with mild redness that resolves within hours. No dressings, no restrictions. Normal activities resume the same day.

Pain Management

HIFU is the most intense of our non-invasive treatments in terms of sensation. Patients describe the feeling as intense warmth or a brief, deep aching as the focused energy is delivered — particularly over bony areas and where the SMAS layer is thinner. It is not unbearable, but requires honest expectation-setting.

Typical discomfort: 5/10 (moderate) — varies by patient and treatment area

We manage discomfort proactively: oral analgesic (paracetamol/ibuprofen) 30 minutes beforehand, slow, methodical delivery technique, and breaks between treatment lines if needed. The majority of our patients complete the full treatment comfortably.

When Will I See Results?

HIFU results are not immediate — they are driven by the body's own biological response to the focused ultrasound energy. Understanding this timeline helps set accurate expectations before treatment.

Day 1

Immediately After — Minimal Visible Change

Mild redness and warmth for a few hours. Some patients notice a very early tightening effect as the immediate collagen contraction takes hold, but this is subtle.

1 mo

Month 1 — Early Improvement

The first visible signs of improvement appear as new collagen begins to form. Skin may appear subtly firmer and more lifted, particularly around the jawline.

2–3 mo

Months 2–3 — Peak Results

Full results are visible at 2–3 months as collagen remodelling reaches completion. Lifting, tightening, and improved skin texture are at their most pronounced.

12–18 mo

Months 12–18 — Maintenance Treatment

Results gradually diminish as the natural ageing process continues. Most patients choose to repeat treatment annually to maintain and build on their results.

Who Is the Ideal Candidate?

HIFU is most effective for patients in the mild-to-moderate laxity range who want genuine lifting without surgery. It is not a replacement for a surgical facelift in patients with significant skin excess, but it can meaningfully delay the need for surgery and provide excellent results for the right candidate.

Ideal for HIFU

  • Age 35–65 with mild to moderate facial laxity
  • Early jowling or mild jawline softening
  • Skin with good underlying elasticity
  • Post-weight-loss patients seeking mild tightening
  • Those who want to delay or avoid surgery
  • Patients seeking maintenance between surgical procedures
  • Good general health with realistic expectations

May Not Be Suitable

  • Significant skin excess (surgical candidate)
  • Active skin infection or inflammation in the treatment area
  • Open wounds or sores in the treatment area
  • Metallic implants or electrical devices (pacemakers)
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • History of nerve conditions in the treatment area
  • Very thin skin with minimal underlying tissue

HIFU vs. Surgical Facelift

HIFU and a surgical facelift both address facial laxity, but they are fundamentally different in their mechanism, result, and appropriateness. Understanding the distinction helps you make an informed choice about which approach fits your needs.

Feature HIFU (Non-Surgical) Surgical Facelift
Mechanism Ultrasound-stimulated collagen regeneration Surgical repositioning of skin and SMAS
Anaesthesia None required General or local with sedation
Incisions None Yes — around hairline and ears
Recovery None (same-day return to activities) 2–4 weeks
Results onset Gradual — full results at 2–3 months Immediate (after swelling resolves)
Results longevity 12–18 months 7–10 years
Best for Mild–moderate laxity, non-surgical candidate Significant laxity, dramatic improvement

Our physicians will advise honestly during your consultation whether HIFU or another approach is the most appropriate choice for your degree of laxity and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients achieve their goals with a single treatment session per year. Because HIFU stimulates the body's natural collagen production, results build progressively and last 12–18 months. Patients with more significant laxity may benefit from an initial course of 2 treatments 3 months apart, followed by annual maintenance. Your physician will advise accordingly at your consultation.

Yes. Unlike surgical facelifts that reposition skin, HIFU works by stimulating your own collagen — the improvement is biological and gradual, making it essentially undetectable to others. Friends and colleagues may notice you look more rested, refreshed, or "well" — but will rarely be able to identify why. This subtlety is one of the most valued aspects of HIFU for our patients.

Absolutely. HIFU works synergistically with other treatments. It is frequently combined with dermal fillers — HIFU lifts and tightens the tissue architecture while fillers restore lost volume — to achieve a comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Botox is also commonly combined. Skin booster treatments can be performed a few weeks after HIFU. Our physicians will recommend the optimal sequence and timing during your consultation.

In trained, experienced hands using calibrated medical-grade devices, the risk of nerve damage or burns is very low. HIFU devices use real-time ultrasound imaging to ensure the energy is deposited at the correct depth, avoiding superficial structures. Transient numbness or tingling is occasionally reported and resolves within days to weeks. We use FDA-cleared, premium HIFU devices and our physicians have extensive training in safe delivery. Your safety is our paramount concern.

Both HIFU and radiofrequency (RF) stimulate collagen through heat — but they differ in depth and specificity. RF energy heats the dermis and upper subcutaneous layer (1–3mm), making it excellent for skin quality and mild tightening. HIFU can target the SMAS at 4.5mm, enabling genuine structural lifting — something RF cannot achieve. Many patients benefit from both: RF for skin quality and texture improvement, HIFU for deeper lifting and structural tightening. Our team will recommend the right combination for your goals.
