What Is Botox?

Botox — and its equivalents such as Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau — are FDA-approved neuromodulators made from purified botulinum toxin type A. When injected in precise, therapeutic doses, they temporarily relax the facial muscles responsible for repetitive movements that cause expression lines.

At Aurelia Aesthetics, wrinkle relaxers are one of our most requested treatments. Our board-certified physicians approach every injection with a sculptor's eye: softening lines without freezing expression, creating results that look thoroughly you — only rested and refreshed.

Unlike surgical procedures, there is no anaesthesia, no incisions, and no significant recovery period. Most patients return to their daily schedule immediately.

Where Can Botox Be Used?

Botox can address a wide range of dynamic lines — wrinkles formed by repeated muscle movement — across the upper and lower face, as well as certain medical and cosmetic concerns beyond wrinkle relaxation.

Forehead Lines

Horizontal lines that form when raising the eyebrows. Treated conservatively to preserve natural movement.

Frown Lines (11s)

Vertical creases between the brows caused by squinting or frowning — one of our most commonly treated areas.

Crow's Feet

Fan-shaped lines at the outer corners of the eyes. Softened to restore a brighter, more open eye area.

Bunny Lines

Fine lines on the sides of the nose that appear when scrunching. Often treated alongside forehead or frown line work.

Jawline Slimming

Masseter injections to relax the chewing muscle, creating a slimmer, more oval facial profile.

Brow Lift

Strategic placement to create a subtle lift at the outer brow, opening the eye and softening the upper face.

Lip Lines

Perioral lines and lip flip treatments to subtly evert the upper lip and smooth vertical lip lines.

Chin Dimpling

Relaxes the mentalis muscle to smooth an orange-peel or pebbly chin texture.

Neck Bands

Nefertiti lift technique to soften prominent platysmal neck bands and improve jawline definition.

How Botox Works

Botulinum toxin works at the neuromuscular junction — the connection point between a nerve and the muscle it controls. When injected, it prevents the nerve from releasing acetylcholine, the chemical messenger that triggers muscle contraction. Without that signal, the targeted muscle relaxes, and the overlying skin smooths.

The effect is temporary because the body gradually forms new nerve terminals and acetylcholine transmission is restored. This is why treatments are typically repeated every 3–4 months. With consistent treatment, many patients find their muscles weaken over time, meaning the same result can be achieved with less product.

01

Consultation

Your physician maps your facial dynamics at rest and in movement. A bespoke injection plan is created for your anatomy and goals.

02

Preparation

The treatment area is cleansed. A topical numbing cream may be applied, though most patients find it unnecessary.

03

Injection

Ultra-fine needles deliver precise doses to specific points. Most areas take 2–5 minutes. Total treatment time is 10–20 minutes.

04

Post-Treatment

You leave the clinic immediately. Minor redness or pinpoint swelling may be present for 30–60 minutes.

Results Timeline

Botox does not work instantly — results unfold gradually as the muscles respond to treatment. Here is what you can expect:

24h

Day 1 — Immediately After

You may notice minor redness or tiny bumps at injection sites. These resolve within an hour. No visible change in the treated muscles yet.

3–5d

Days 3–5 — Initial Effect

The first signs of muscle relaxation become visible. You will begin to notice reduced movement in the treated areas when making expressions.

2wk

Week 2 — Full Results

Results are fully settled. This is the optimal time for a follow-up review. Any minor adjustments can be made at this visit if needed.

3–4m

Months 3–4 — Gradual Wear-Off

Muscle movement begins to return. Most patients book their next appointment before the effect fully wears off to maintain continuity of results.

Before & After Care

Following these guidelines will maximise the safety and effectiveness of your treatment.

Before Your Treatment

  • Avoid blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil) for 5–7 days beforehand to minimise bruising. Consult your GP before stopping any prescribed medication.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment.
  • Come to your appointment with a clean face — no heavy makeup, especially around the treatment area.
  • Stay well-hydrated on the day of your appointment.
  • Inform your physician of all medications, supplements, and any previous cosmetic treatments.
  • If you have an important event, schedule treatment at least 2 weeks beforehand to allow full results to settle.

After Your Treatment

  • Remain upright for at least 4 hours — do not lie down or bend forward.
  • Avoid touching, massaging, or rubbing treated areas for 24 hours.
  • Do not exercise vigorously or expose yourself to heat (saunas, hot yoga, steam rooms) for 24–48 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Some mild swelling, redness, or bruising at injection sites is normal and usually resolves within 24–48 hours.
  • Apply arnica gel or take arnica supplements to help minimise bruising if needed.
  • Do not receive facial massage, facials, or skin treatments for at least 2 weeks.
  • Contact us immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms such as drooping of the eyelid or difficulty swallowing.

Risks & Who Should Avoid Treatment

Botox has an excellent safety record when administered by qualified physicians. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential side effects and contraindications that we discuss with you during consultation.

Possible Side Effects

  • Redness, swelling, or bruising at injection sites (temporary)
  • Mild headache in the 24–48 hours following treatment
  • Temporary heaviness or tightness in the treated area
  • Asymmetry or uneven effect (addressable at follow-up)
  • Rare: temporary eyelid or brow ptosis (drooping)
  • Very rare: spread of effect beyond the injection site

Who Should Avoid Botox

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals
  • Those with known allergy to botulinum toxin or albumin
  • Patients with neuromuscular disorders (e.g. myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome)
  • Active skin infection, inflammation, or cold sore in the treatment area
  • Those taking certain antibiotics (aminoglycosides) — discuss with your doctor
  • Anyone within 2 weeks of another botulinum toxin treatment

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — our goal is always natural-looking results. At Aurelia, we use conservative doses targeted to specific muscles, leaving surrounding muscles unaffected. You will still be able to smile, raise your eyebrows, and express yourself normally. The lines simply will not deepen when you do.

Most patients describe Botox injections as a very brief, mild sting — comparable to a tiny pinch. The needles used are ultra-fine, and the injections are quick. Topical numbing cream is available on request, though the majority of our patients do not feel they need it.

You will start to notice the effect within 3–5 days, with full results visible at around the 2-week mark. Duration varies by individual, but most patients enjoy results lasting 3–4 months. With regular treatment, some patients find their results last slightly longer over time as the muscles adapt.

If you choose to stop, your face will simply return to its pre-treatment state as the effect wears off — it does not accelerate ageing or cause your skin to look worse. Some patients find that years of Botox have softened lines even between treatments, as the muscles have been less active.

Absolutely. Botox is frequently combined with dermal fillers in a "liquid facelift" approach — Botox relaxes dynamic lines while fillers restore volume and contour. It can also be combined with skin booster treatments and laser procedures. Our physicians will recommend any combination that suits your goals during consultation.
